On November 5, 2005, a meeting at Farmer Boy Diner late at night changed a lot for a group of friends. Scribbled on a grey place-mat were the plans to start Fotia Hellenic Society. A professional dance troupe for local Hellenic-Americans to broaden their love for the Greek and Cypriot culture. The practices started the following week, a few first shows were rocky, but our friends and supporters were there from day one. Fotia continued to grow, and utilized practice space at St. Sophia, St. Basil and the University at Albany. They continued to host performances at Ristorante Paradiso in Albany and were also hired to perform at various cultural events, including the RPI International Festival. Finally settling at St. George in Schenectady, Fotia found their home. The troupe has grown and so has the vision for the group. Prometheus Orchestra developed from the relationships that were formed with the Fotia dancers. At the present time, Fotia Hellenic Society continues to fuel their love and passion for Greek and Cypriot culture. The troupe has expanded their knowledge base of dances, and is lucky enough to have costumes handmade for them to represent various regions of Greece and Cyprus. At the present time, Fotia Hellenic Society is continuing to perform upwards of twenty shows in addition to the St. George Festival each year! They have also host dance lessons in Saratoga and Albany to bring the beauty of their art to the community. Fotia cannot express how grateful they are for the continued support they have received from their families, friends, students, Philhelenes, community organizations, the Greek Orthodox community and St.George. Thank you for supporting Fotia Hellenic Society.
